The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced its intent to extend the REAL ID full enforcement date by 24 months, from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Under the new regulations published to execute this change, states will now have additional time to ensure their residents have driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet the security standards established by the REAL ID Act. As required by the law, following the enforcement deadline, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will be prohibited from accepting driver’s licenses and identification cards that do not meet these federal standards.

Whether you’re traveling with an expired license, misplaced your ID, or recently changed your name, you can still fly. Here are a few tips you should know before you fly.
Do you know what a valid TSA ID is?
While booking your flight, be sure to fill out your name as it is printed on your ID. Doing this will save you time and will help alleviate any likely delays at the TSA checkpoint. Find the complete list of valid identification:

What if my name has changed?
If your name has been legally changed and now differs from your identity document(s) (i.e., birth certificate or passport), proof of the name change must be provided to obtain a REAL ID. Acceptable documents supporting a legal name change include a marriage license, divorce decree, or court order. In all cases, the documents must show a clear trail of name changes from the name on the identity document to the currentname.

TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.
Forgot Your ID?
In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity.
If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.
You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you choose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.
TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

TSA accepts variations on suffixes on boarding passes and ID. Suffixes are not required on boarding passes. If there is a suffix on the boarding pass, and there is not one on the ID or vice versa, that is considered an acceptable variation.
What awaits me at the security checkpoint?
You should arrive as early as possible, at least two hours prior to your scheduled departure to allow enough time to complete the screening process. The TSA officer will ask for your boarding pass and an acceptable form of ID prior to entering the security checkpoint. Our officers will review your travel document(s) and ID to ensure that the information presented matches. Once your information is compared and your identity is verified, you will be allowed to continue through the security checkpoint.
Do i need a passport to fly domestic in U.S.?
If you’re traveling with an expired license or passport you may still be able to fly. Acceptable forms of ID cannot be more than 12 months past the identified expiration date. US citizens do not currently need a passport for domestic flights. While most people present a state-issued driver’s license or a military ID, the Transportation Security Administration lists several acceptable forms of identification.

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is extending the REAL ID full enforcement date by 19 months, from October 1, 2021 to May 7, 2025, due to circumstances resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Can you fly with a temporary paper license?
Yes. The Administration knows that mishaps happen. There are times when passengers can’t show the necessary documents to fly. So, this means that if you ever get to the airport without your ID, because you left it at home or you lost it.
You might still be allowed to fly, as long as you can provide additional information. TSA has multiple ways to confirm your identity, for instance by checking in existing databases.

TSA seeks input on mobile driver’s licenses to inform REAL ID rulemaking
WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Strategy, Policy, and Plans and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) published a request for information in the Federal Register seeking information about security standards and technologies concerning mobile driver’s licenses. Responses to the request for information will support future DHS/TSA rulemaking to update the REAL ID Act implementing regulation to accommodate mobile driver’s licenses. TSA requirements for ID.
Mobile driver’s licenses are digital representations of physical driver’s licenses, and are typically accessed via an app installed on a smartphone. Conceptually, mobile driver’s licenses are similar to digital representations of physical credit cards that are accessed via apps installed on smartphones. DHS and TSA are interested in mobile driver’s licenses because, compared to physical driver’s licenses, mobile driver’s licenses could provide greater security to TSA and all federal agencies verifying an individual’s identity, stronger privacy protections to individuals, and health and safety benefits to all users by enabling touchless identity verification.
“The TSA workforce comprises teams of security-focused innovators who look for opportunities to improve security and the traveler experience across the nation’s transportation network,” said Darby LaJoye, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the TSA Administrator. “The mobile driver’s license is one emerging technology example, and TSA is interested in exploring its incorporation into our identity verification processes.”
The Request for Information, solicits comments and input regarding technical approaches, applicable industry standards and best practices to ensure that mobile driver’s licenses can be issued and authenticated with features that ensure security, privacy and identity fraud detection. Comments may be submitted until June 18, 2021.
The REAL ID Act applies to mobile and digital driver’s licenses and identification cards. To enable federal agency acceptance of mobile driver’s licenses for “official purposes,” which the REAL ID Act defines as including access to federal facilities, nuclear power plants, and boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft, the REAL ID Act implementing regulation requires an update to accommodate mobile driver’s licenses. The Real ID Act is a federal law that establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Florida is compliant with the Real ID Act, which means that Florida residents can obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card.
To obtain a Real ID in Florida, you will need to provide the following documents:
- Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport
- Social Security card or proof of Social Security number
- Two proofs of Florida residency, such as a utility bill or lease agreement

The Texas Department of Public Safety is committed to protecting the citizens of Texas by only licensing individuals who are properly identified and can demonstrate their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle on public roadways.
The United States Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 in response to the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The 2005 Real ID Act, which mandates that U.S. travelers must carry more than a standard driver’s license to board a domestic flight, was set to go into effect on May 3, 2023. But on Monday, after some 15 years of delays, the Department of Homeland Security pushed the deadline for enforcement by an additional 24 months. Travelers now have until May 7, 2025, to update their documents.
The Real ID Act is a post-Sept. 11 law that requires U.S. travelers flying within the United States to show Transportation Security Administration agents either a security-enhanced driver’s license or another T.S.A.-approved form of identification like a passport. When the act eventually goes into effect, a state driver’s license that does not contain a Real ID seal will no longer be accepted at airport security checkpoints across the country.
Congress passed the Real ID Act after finding that nearly all of the hijackers who boarded commercial planes on Sept. 11, 2001, were carrying U.S. driver’s licenses and state IDs, and that most of those documents had been obtained fraudulently. The act, which sets minimum standards for driver’s licenses and other types of identification cards, was initially intended to take effect in 2008. It has been extended multiple times, including twice during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The most recent rollout has been marked by confusion. While Real IDs show the applicant has been screened and approved by federal standards, the cards are issued by individual states, U.S. territories (except for American Samoa, which is under review) and the District of Columbia. Processes for applying vary from state to state, and the physical look of the card varies, too: Real ID cards are marked by a star, but its placement is inconsistent.
In some states, including New York, Michigan and Minnesota, residents have the alternative option to apply for an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is Real ID-compliant but is marked not by a star but a flag. Unlike Real IDs, E.D.L.s can also be used for travel to and from the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries in lieu of a passport.
And in Washington State, residents can only apply for an E.D.L. The standard Real ID license isn’t available at all.
This time around, it seemed the deadline for May 3, 2023, was going to stick, and state motor vehicle departments rolled out marketing campaigns to encourage residents to change their documents in time. In many states, the switch to Real IDs requires a fee.
But this month, federal authorities determined that not enough citizens were ready for the change, said Dan Velez, the New England spokesman for the T.S.A., and made the decision to extend the deadline two more years.
