Alcala Gate

Leaving El Retiro park through the Felipe IV gate, take the right on Calle Alfonso XII, until the park ends. There is La Puerta de Alcala. It is a door of neoclassical style and monumental aspect similar to the Arches of Triumph of the Roman Empire. It was built in 1778.

The curious thing about this construction is that it is the first triumphal arch built in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire, being older than others such as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris ( 1806) and the Brandenburg Gate ( 1788)  in Berlin.

  1. Three days? You could have saved yourself some time and used a map next time instead of spending three days looking for the bloody place. /s

  2. Nice! I was mostly making a joke about how the wording might say you were looking for it and only found it at the end of three days. 🙂
