Located in the Grand Central Terminal

The Gerber Group, leader of the hotel industry that owns and operates many of the most famous bars and restaurants in the city, acquired the Campbell Apartment with the clear objective of restoring its original grandeur.

It is one of the most touristic places in New York and its visitors travel through time until the time of the Big Bands of jazz, at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Restoration

The magnificent restoration was carried out under the responsibility of the prestigious design and architecture studio Ingrao Inc., which managed to maintain the historic architecture of the property. He also introduced elements of contemporary design that create a refined atmosphere but at the same time warm and comfortable.

History of Power Bank

History of Power Banks and Lithium batteries

When was the first call of a mobile phone?

Martin Cooper, manager of Motorola, made a call to, Joel Engel, of Bell Labs of AT&T on April 3, 1973, from Sixth Avenue in New York, with a prototype of Motorola DynaTac 8000X. That was a mobile phone that weighed approximately one kilo and was about 13 inches (33 cm) tall taking into account the antenna. It was the first call made from a mobile phone.

This prototype mobile phone used about ten hours to charge. Its battery had a range of just 30 minutes. Something that today is absolutely unthinkable

Although the call was made in 1973, it was only in 1984 that the cell phone was released at a cost of USD 3,995. 300,000 units were thus sold. Ameritech Mobile Communications LLC was the first company in the United States to provide mobile phone service. The development of mobile phones was the first stage in the power bank history

Alessandro Volta Battery

Alessandro Volta discovered the pile or column, which he initially called "artificial electric organ", studying the effects of galvanism on frog legs. Volta thought that what he called galvanism was an animal electric current. It was named in honor of Galvani, founder of Nervous Physiology, who established this current by joining two different metals by means of nerves or muscles of an animal. In reality, galvanic current is a direct current (d.c.).

Volta built the first stack that we can reproduce. Volta stacked discs of equal size of copper and zinc, alone or with tin, alternated, with a moistened cloth interspersed between each one. This "stack of discs" begins and ends with discs of different types. By connecting the disks at the ends with a wire, an electrical flow flowed. By impregnating the cloth with certain salts, the current obtained was much higher.

A very important chapter in the history of the power bank, is who invented the lithium battery. John Goodenough invented, in 1980, the basic technology of lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones, notebooks, tablets, cameras and of course power banks. At age 97 he continues to investigate and is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas in Austin, USA (you can send an email to (goodenough@mail.utexas.edu). (1)
John B. Goodenough won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 alongside M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for the development of lithium-ion batteries

In 1979, Goodenough showed that by using lithium cobalt oxide as the cathode of a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, it would be possible to achieve a high density of stored energy with an anode other than metallic lithium. This discovery paved the way for the development of lithium-ion batteries, which are now in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles.

The lithium-ion battery developed by Goodenough in 1980 began to be marketed in the 1990s. Today it is the dominant battery technology for almost every portable device, including cars.

What are the advantages of the lithium battery?

  • Durability
  • Responsibility with the environment
  • High energy density
  • Optimum relation weight / Amount of Stored energy

And the disadvantages?

The most notable and dangerous danger of explosion. As has happened with Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 phones, if these types of batteries are overcharged they can explode.

Why do lithium batteries explode?

"Normally, when a power bank explodes the problem lies in the original battery used by the device. The electrolyte they used is inorganic, which is flammable. And if it charges very fast (improper charger) that overheating causes the explosion," he said Goodenough For the American chemist, the important thing is to "monitor the battery operation very carefully" and not charge the cell phone too quickly. In other words, give the battery time to dissipate the heat from the load.

Another factor to consider is the outside temperature. At higher external temperature, lower dissipation capacity and increased risk of explosion. Smartphone cases also contribute to mofify the battery dissipation. For this reason you have to choose the right case for each smarphone within those recommended by each manufacturer. (2) (3) (4)

Who Invented the First Power bank?

History of Power Bank: The Power Banks were first announced in 2001 at the Las Vegas International Consumer Electronic Show, where a student used a portable AA battery set in an electrical circuit. unfortunately we don't know the name of quin fabrico this first power bank

At the beginning of the 21st century the battery of mobile phones had a high duration. Here begins the true history of power bank. So the Power Banks did not really exist until Apple released the first iPhone in 2007. This smartphone could not easily remove the battery. In addition to this, the autonomy of continuous use of the device was 4 hours. This created the market and the demand for Power Banks.

Power Bank Tips

For a Power Bank to last as long as possible:

  • Store the Power Bank in a place where it is not exposed to very high temperatures. If we store it in a place where it is very hot it could be degraded (internal chemical reaction), and could even explode and cause a fire.
  • Keep the battery charged to a maximum of 60% when it is stored. important. If it is not going to be used for a while, it will not be stored at maximum or below 20%. To extend its useful life, it is ideal to store it with a load of just over half, that is, 55% or 60%.
  • Check that the charger is of a voltage compatible with the input voltage of the Power Bank. It is important to charge the Power Bank with a compatible charger.
  • Avoid putting the device that is being charged in direct connection with the Power Bank, as it would raise the temperature of both devices. In this case the power bank degrades very quickly
  • It is recommended that when a smartphone is going to be charged we set the airplane mode to avoid internet connections. This way it will load faster.
  • The life of a power bank is measured by full charge cycles. Find out from the manufacturer how many life cycles the expected useful life is.
  • To transport a Power Bank by plane, follow the rules of the Transport Security Administration (TSA) here:

What are kinds of Power Bank?

  • Pocket-size: With a capacity between 1000 and 2000 mAh, they are useful to carry on a daily basis when we run out of battery. Only smartphones
  • Great capacity: Allows simultaneous charging of smartphone and Tablet. Capacity 3000-30000 mAh. From 2 to 4 full charges on a smartphone or more.
  • Specials Capacity: from 10,000 mAh. Water, shock, dust and snow resistant models.
  • Solar: They are recharged through a solar panel. Recommended for camping, hiking, etc.
  • For cars: Ideal for when the car runs out of battery. Also known as "starters." Perfect to carry in the trunk of the car.
  • Custom: On them you can print your company logo and then you can give them to your customers at any event, fair or congress. There are all kinds. From the cheapest made of plastic to the most exclusive made of aluminum and with the laser printed logo.
